Beyond the Material Plan, the Astral Sea, and all of Aetherium lies Death. Scholars theorise that not even the strongest celestial or abyssal hold sway over those who have fully passed on through Death. Death appears as a river which is divided into nine precincts which are barred by nine gates in turn. Death has been described by those who dare venture into it as spanning from horizon to horizon, the waters leaching colour and life from those who dare linger. Sufficiently determined souls and spirits may panic upon finding themselves in Deaths waters and so fight against the current. Those that manage to return to life through their own power, misfortune, or are compelled to do so by necromantic means will typically reform as a type of undead.
Only those that return with the aid of the Divine or Abyssal beings power have the opportunity to return with a proper semblance of life. This may be at their whim or whether through mortal arcane workings laced with their essence, such as a bishops true resurrection spell.
No soul that has passed through the Ninth Gate has ever returned.
Meher, the Great Guide strengthens the border between Death and the realms and is opposed by Rayse, the Gravemind.
Meher and Rayse are the only deities able to manifest their selves within the waters of Death.
Clergy of Meher who bind souls to their service only do so temporarily, and only those souls who fight against the currents of Death, and ensure they are sent deep into Death when banished.
