Halflings, also known as hobbits, are a diminutive race of people who value the simple things in life such as good food, drink, and companionship. They are skilled farmers, gardeners, and cooks, and are known for their excellent cuisine. Halflings on the world of Roshar reside primarily in the Hallan Protectorate, a client state of the Dwarven nation of United Kingdom of Valammar.
Despite their small stature, Halflings are well respected by other races due to their perception of being placid and friendly. They are considered to be trustworthy and reliable, and are often sought after for their wisdom and guidance. Halflings in Halla are an agricultural powerhouse and produce the majority of the world’s food, making them an essential and highly valued part of society.
The Halflings’ close kinship with the Dwarves is evident in their shared motto, “Rock and Stone,” which represents their strong bond and mutual respect for each other. This relationship has been instrumental in the prosperity and success of both races.
During a Desolation, a catastrophic event perpetrated by the Illithid, the Halflings’ agricultural skills become even more vital, as they provide much-needed sustenance to the people of Roshar. Despite their peaceful nature, the Halflings are not to be underestimated in times of crisis, and have proven themselves to be brave and resourceful when called upon to defend their home and way of life.
