Bugbears, also known as “The First People” in their native tongue, are humanoid creatures distinguished by their shaggy brown fur, which varies from dark to light shades. Standing at an average height of seven feet, Bugbears possess facial features that resemble those of a bear, with sharp teeth and pointed ears. Their senses, especially their hearing and smell, are exceptionally keen, aiding them in their daily lives.

Culturally, Bugbears are a friendly and hospitable people who place great importance on manners. Despite their welcoming nature, they are isolationist due to their endangered status. They inhabit the mountainous forests on the northeastern coast of the island of Urkesh on the planet Roshar, where they maintain minimal contact with the outside world. Bugbears are adept archers and hunters, utilizing their heightened senses to track prey effectively. While they are generally peaceful, they are known for their fierce response when provoked, though such instances are rare given their emphasis on etiquette.

The Bugbear society operates with a decentralized government, lacking a central leader or ruling body. Community decisions are made collectively, with significant influence from elders and shamans. Their religious practices are shamanistic, centered around reverence for nature and the spirits of the forest. Bugbears strive to live in harmony with the natural world and are dedicated to its protection.

Historically, Bugbears were once a populous race, but their numbers have dwindled due to the encroachment of other races on their lands. While they have been given the derogatory name “Bugbears” by outsiders, they proudly refer to themselves as the First People, honoring their heritage and history.
